SELECTING THE RIGHT ENCRYPTION
SOLUTION IN THE BIG BREACH ERA
By Charles Goldberg, Senior Director Product Marketing, Vormetric, a Thales Company
When it comes to data protection, there seems to be an endless array of products and solutions. After
all, the Identity Theft Research Center reports almost 400 breaches have occurred in 2016 alone,
making data breach protection big business. However, one tried and true data security solution has
seen tremendous growth, particularly in the cloud—encryption.
A recent 2016 Global Encryption Trends Study from the Ponemon Institute noted that 56% of
organizations are moving sensitive data into the cloud, with 44% of respondents saying their
organizations protect sensitive or confidential data at rest in the cloud using encryption. Another 17
percent of respondents say data at rest is made unreadable using some other mechanism such as
tokenization or data masking.
Recent news of breaches at SWIFT, Hollywood Presbyterian and V-Tech demonstrate the importance
of encryption. It is too late for those companies to protect their data, but here is some advice for you
to protect your data on-premises and in the cloud.
What should I encrypt? There are three key questions to answer. What data needs protecting?
(Often you will find that your data protection requirements grow over time). What form (unstructured
files, databases, logs, etc.) is the data in? And where is the data located -- in a data center, on your
mobile device, in the cloud, on an Internet of Things (IoT) device or in a remote location?
